A Celebration of a Happy Marriage.

The recent exhibition in The Well of the Cathedral which showcased the work the Mu does throughout the Liverpool Diocese prompted Betty Roebuck, bell ringer and  long time member of the Ormskirk MU to tell us about a very happy experience she had back in l998.

Mary Elizabeth Heywood married George Sumner in her home church of Colwall on 26th July 1848. The couple were blessed with three children and, as we know, when Mary became a grandmother she was moved to found a group in which mothers could give each other mutual support and share the joys and problems of raising their children.     In l998 the ladies of Colwall Parish invited representatives of the MU from all over the country to come to Colwall to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Sumner’s  long and very happy marriage.   Betty Roebuck played a particularly important part in these celebrations as she was one of a group of ladies invited  to ring the church bells in a  joyous peel to mark this happy occasion.
